The "folk opera" Going for a Soldier was written around 1979 with words by Denzil Dudley and music by Jeff Parton. It tells the (fictional) story of three young men who are recruited into
the 64th (2nd Staffordshire) Regiment at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. Plans for a production featuring Muggins Fancy sadly never materialised, but the show was taken up by Ray Johnson's
"Stoke Original Theatre" company, who performed it successfully at several festivals, culminating in a run on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Jeff has adapted "Going for a Soldier" as a one-man show, which he has performed at several Festivals.
